Civet Works

Terms of Service

Last updated: September 8, 2026

These Terms apply to Read It, the iPhone EPUB reader provided by Civet Works. By using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use it. Apple’s applicable App Store terms and standard End User License Agreement also apply; these Terms do not replace mandatory Apple terms or consumer rights.

1. Reading and permitted use

Read It lets you import EPUB files, read them on your iPhone and optionally generate chapter audio through OpenRouter. It does not provide a bookstore or included book catalog.

Use only files, text and other content you are entitled to use. A right to possess or read a book does not automatically include permission to submit it to an online speech service or redistribute the resulting audio. You are responsible for obtaining permissions required for your intended use.

Do not use Read It to infringe intellectual-property or privacy rights, impersonate others deceptively, interfere with services, bypass access restrictions, or violate applicable law. Nothing here restricts activities that cannot lawfully be restricted.

2. Your content and generated audio

Your imported content remains subject to its existing ownership and licenses. Civet Works does not claim ownership of your books or obtain a license to publish them merely because you use Read It.

When you request speech, chapter text and the selected voice parameters are submitted to OpenRouter and Fish Audio. Some voices also use reference recordings and transcripts bundled with Read It. The app does not provide user-created voice cloning.

AI speech can mispronounce, omit or alter words, and sentence highlighting and generation progress can be approximate. Check the source text when accuracy matters. We do not guarantee a particular voice performance, perfect alignment, or any ownership or commercial-use rights in provider output beyond those actually granted by applicable law and provider terms.

3. OpenRouter and service charges

Generating new audio requires internet access and an OpenRouter connection, established through OAuth or a valid API key you are authorized to use. Service usage is associated with the account behind that key. You must meet the applicable providers’ age and account requirements and protect your credentials.

Read It does not sell in-app generation credits or subscriptions in this version. An app purchase, if applicable, does not include OpenRouter credits. OpenRouter and its providers determine service pricing, limits and availability. Free endpoints may change or become unavailable. Selecting a paid model asks for confirmation; subsequent generation through that model can consume account credits.

Starting a new chapter, requesting a download, changing to an uncached voice/model/speed combination, or explicitly retrying a failed request may cause new service usage. Pausing playback does not necessarily cancel generation. A cancellation, timeout or unusable result does not establish that no provider usage occurred. We do not determine provider billing adjustments or guarantee refunds from other services.

Review OpenRouter’s terms and the applicable Fish Audio terms. Those agreements govern their services; contact the relevant provider about platform account or billing issues.

4. Local storage and access

Books, reading positions and generated audio are stored locally. Keep independent copies of your original books. Local data and caches may be lost through deletion, device problems or operating-system storage management. Read It does not provide an app-managed cloud backup or synchronization service.

Disconnecting OpenRouter removes Read It’s local credential and account binding. It does not revoke the platform key, delete remote history or cancel processing already accepted by a provider. Manage those matters directly with the provider.

Some bundled voices are restricted to approved accounts through a configuration downloaded by the app. Access can change, and cached rules may remain in effect during network outages. Voice or model availability is not a guarantee of indefinite access. We do not provide executable functionality through this configuration.

5. Privacy

The Privacy Policy explains local storage, chapter-text uploads, account identifiers, website requests and your controls. Using a feature may require an additional permission or disclosure; these Terms do not replace any consent required before sharing personal data.

6. Availability and responsibility

To the extent permitted by law, Read It is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, compatibility with every EPUB, or the availability or accuracy of third-party audio services.

To the extent permitted by law, Civet Works is not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of the app, loss of local data or unavailable third-party services. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability or statutory rights that cannot legally be excluded, including applicable consumer guarantees.

7. Changes and stopping use

We may update the app and these Terms as its features or requirements change. Revised Terms will be posted with an updated date, and any additional notice or agreement required by applicable law will be provided. You can stop using the app, disconnect service access and remove local data through the available controls.
